An old-money dinner table is never fussy. It is generous, candlelit, and a little bit timeless, the kind of table where no one notices the time. You do not need a family silver collection to set one. You need a plan for linen, light, and flowers, and a willingness to let things look slightly undone.

1. Start with a cloth, or a beautiful bare table

Choose one: a crisp white or oatmeal linen tablecloth that falls generously over the edges, or a bare wood table with a long linen runner. White linen reads formal and grand; bare wood with linen feels like a country estate. Either way, press it, or embrace the rumple of washed linen.

2. Layer the place setting

Build each setting from the bottom up: a charger or large dinner plate, a smaller plate, then a linen napkin folded simply on top or tucked under the fork. Mixing inherited or thrifted china with plain white plates looks collected rather than mismatched. Add two glasses per person, one for water and one for wine.

3. Light the table low and plentiful

Candlelight is the whole secret. Run a line of tapers down the center in brass or silver holders, then scatter votives between them so the light is at different heights. Use unscented candles near food and keep fragrance for the entry or sideboard.

4. Keep the flowers low and loose

Guests should be able to see each other. Keep arrangements below chin height: low bowls of garden roses, trailing greenery down the center, or pears and grapes piled on a footed dish. Seasonal and slightly wild always looks more expensive than tight and perfect.

5. Seat everyone comfortably

Comfort is part of the luxury. Upholstered chairs at the ends of the table, often called host chairs, make a dining room feel instantly grander.

6. Little touches that read as old money

Handwritten place cards, cloth napkins with a simple ring or tied with a ribbon, a small dish of salt with a tiny spoon, and coffee served afterwards in the living room by candlelight. None of it is expensive. All of it says that someone took care.
